I love making homemade fruit crisps, especially this vegan apple crisp. It is such an easy dessert and can be made with so many seasonal fruit options, like berry crisps (see this delicious strawberry crisp recipe). The vegan apple crisp is just absolutely perfect for the fall and brings in all the warm, cozy flavors. They also make a great, quick, and healthier option for dessert for a get-together with friends or family!

Are you Team Apple or Team Pumpkin during the Fall? I lean more towards team apple but these vegan pumpkin pancakes are still something we make seasonally! When it comes to Team Apple though, this vegan apple crisp recipe is my ultimate go-to!

    Ingredients for Vegan Apple Crisp

    For the Vegan Crisp Topping

    • Apples. The best apples to use in a homemade apple crisp are apple varieties like granny smith or honey crisp. You are looking for crisp, tart, and also sweet. I have tried making this with a variety of apples so it's OKAY to use what you have on hand. You can adjust the tartness but adding more lemon juice.
    • Sweeteners and Flavors. Maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and orange juice (for a little tartness)!
    • Thickening Agent. I used cornstarch to keep the apple crisp as a thick slurry.

    For the Vegan Crisp Topping

    • Rolled oats. I like the crispness rolled oats give to this crisp. You can use gluten-free oats as well.
    • All-purpose flour. If you are gluten-free, use gluten-free oats and gluten-free flour.
    • Sweeteners and Flavors. Maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon.
    • Coconut oil, not melted. You can also use vegan butter.
    • Baking powder to help it crisp!

🍏 How to Make a Vegan Apple Crisp

    1. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
    2. Mix the apple base ingredients in one bowl. and transfer to a baking dish greased with coconut oil.
    3. Combine the crisp ingredients. I like to use my hands for this to get a better crumbly-type mixture.
    4. Bake for about 30-40 minutes until your crisp is golden brown from the top.
    5. Enjoy warm by itself, with your favorite vegan ice cream (vanilla is the best with this!), dairy-free whipped cream, or caramel sauce!
    • For a gluten-free apple crisp:
      • Substitute the all-purpose flour for almond flour or gluten-free flour with a 1:1 ratio

    Storage

This apple crisp can be cooked and stored in the fridge for 2-4 days. To reheat, place in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. You may also, reheat it in the oven. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F, place it in an oven-safe dish, and heat for about 5-10 minutes or until heated thoroughly.

What is the Difference Between A Crisp and a Crumble?

    Crisp:

    • The topping typically includes oats, which gives it a crunchy, textured finish.
    • In addition to flour, sweetener, and a fat (in this case, we used coconut oil), crisps often have nuts and spices (like cinnamon).

    Crumble:

    • The topping is usually simpler, made with just flour, sweetener, and fat (butter or oil).
    • It has a finer, more crumbly texture (hence the name) instead of a crispy one like a crisp!

This was sooo good! I made this for thanksgiving and topped it with whipped cream. Everyone loved it! And so easy to make. I had large Granny Smith apples so I only did about 4.5 apples instead of 5 like the recipe calls for.
