What is a Paneer Taco?

A paneer taco is a fusion dish that brings together Indian spices and the classic taco format. Instead of traditional taco fillings, cubes of paneer are marinated in yogurt and spices, then cooked until golden and flavorful.

The paneer is layered into tortillas with sautéed vegetables and finished with sauces like cilantro chutney or garlic chutney for extra flavor.

It's a fun and delicious way to enjoy paneer, especially if you're looking for something a little different from traditional curries.

📋 Ingredients for Paneer Tacos

  • Paneer - Paneer is a soft, Indian cottage cheese that holds its shape when cooked. You can make it at home using milk and lemon juice, but I often use store-bought paneer for convenience. Brands like Gopi, Swad, or Haldiram work well. It is sold in Indian grocery stores, Whole Foods, and Costco.
  • Mixed Bell Peppers - I like using a mix of red and green bell peppers. The red peppers add sweetness while the green peppers give a slightly sharper flavor and nice color contrast.
  • Red Onions - Red onions add sweetness and a little crunch to the filling.
  • Spices - Kashmiri red chili powder, ginger, garlic, garam masala, turmeric, Kasoori methi, and salt. Cilantro Chutney or Sauce - These tacos are even better with a drizzle of Cilantro Chutney, Cilantro Sauce, or Garlic Chutney. You can use homemade versions or store-bought if you're short on time.

📖 Marinating the Paneer for Maximum Flavor

The marinade is what gives the paneer its incredible flavor and I highly recommend that you do not skip it!

The yogurt base. The base of the marinade is yogurt, which adds a creamy tang and helps the spices coat the paneer evenly. I usually use full-fat Greek yogurt, but regular yogurt works well too.

Spices and herbs. Traditional Indian spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and garam masala are great additions to your marinade for flavor. To the yogurt, I add cumin, turmeric, garam masala, and chili powder, along with fresh ginger and garlic. You can adjust the proportions of these spices to suit your taste preferences.

Marinate. Let the paneer marinate for at least 30 minutes. If you have the time, marinating it longer will deepen the flavor even more. Marinating is a crucial step that makes your tacos more flavorful.

When marinating the paneer, make sure to coat it thoroughly with the mixture so every piece is well-coated. Allow the paneer to soak in the marinade for at least 30 minutes, or even better, overnight in the refrigerator. This gives the flavors ample time to penetrate the paneer, resulting in more flavor.

👩🏽‍🍳 Cooking the Paneer Tacos

Stovetop Method (with a gas stove only). Set the paneer cubes over a heated and greased stovetop grill. Cook them until they are golden on each side and slightly charred at the grill mark lines.

Oven Method. Set the paneer over an oven tray lined with parchment paper. Spray the paneer with cooking spray or brush them with ghee or oil. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for about 15 minutes, rotating them in between. Keep an eye on them to ensure they do not burn. Finish these by broiling them in the last 2-3 minutes.

Air Fryer Method. For this method, place the paneer in the air fryer at 425°F and air fry for about 15-20 minutes, rotating every 5 minutes.

Assemble the Tacos

  • Start by spreading a little cilantro sauce onto your tortilla. Add the paneer filling, then layer on the sautéed peppers and onions.
  • Top everything with a spoonful of chutney, a sprinkle of chaat masala, a drizzle of Sweet Tamarind Chutney, and some fresh cilantro.
  • If you want to take them up a notch, you can also add sev or a little shredded Amul cheese for extra texture and flavor.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Of course! I recommend prepping the paneer filling by marinading it and cooking it. You can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

What tortillas work best for paneer tacos?

Both corn and flour tortillas work well for this recipe. To make it more like a kathi roll, use a homemade or store bought paratha.
